Department Rules


  1. All general rules and regulations for the Madison County Fair apply to this department.

  2. All exhibitors must be members actively enrolled in a 4-H/FFA Beef Project. Exhibitors MUST be a 4-H/FFA Chapter member in good standing in Madison and/or Virginia Cooperative Extension Planning Districts 9 & 10 which includes: Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Rappahannock, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson counties.

  3. Only Madison County 4-H/FFA members are eligible to exhibit and sell market steers at the Madison County Fair. Sale of market animals is optional. Refer to the Madison County Fair Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors from eligible counties are invited to show breeding heifers at the Madison County Fair.

  4. All animals must be owned or under the care of the exhibitor at the time of weigh-in. Heifer entries must be under the care of the exhibitor by May 1, 2008.

  5. All market steers must be owned or under the care of the exhibitor at the time of weigh-in.

  6. Each animal exhibited must be listed on the official entry form. All market animals must be tagged with a number from the extension office.

  7. Madison County animal exhibits MUST arrive on Tuesday, July 15 between 9:00 a.m. and noon or between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16. Animals MUST be in the barn by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Madison County animals may leave after 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 19. Any exhibitor who removes an animal before the designated time will forfeit all ribbons and premiums. County exhibitors who stay until after the Demolition Derby will receive and additional $5 per head bonus. Visiting counties may remove animals as soon as the show is over.

  8. Exhibitors may show no more than two entries per class and no more than five beef animals total. Only 4-H/FFA members exhibiting animals at the Madison County Fair will be allowed to assist in showing a second entry.

  9. Health Regulations: The Livestock Committee will check animals for general health, proper castration, ringworm, lice, mange, warts, and other parasites. Any unhealthy animal(s) will be dismissed from the grounds.

  10. All market animals must be properly castrated with no secondary male characteristics, to be eligible for show and sale.

  11. No horned animals will be allowed unless horns are a commonly desired breed characteristic; in this case, the exhibitor must receive written permission from the livestock committee.

  12. Animals MUST be halter broken. The junior exhibitor MUST lead their steer to final weigh-in. The show management reserves the right to remove any animal(s) they feel are unruly or that are considered a safety hazard.

  13. All livestock must be shown clean and dry. Animal MUST be clipped, washed and brushed/combed. Animal may be fitted, but no adhesive products are permitted.

  14. 4-H/FFA exhibitors are expected to be the primary care provider for their animals. Assistance may only be provided by the parents and family members, a bona fide Madison 4-H volunteer leader enrolled in 4-H, a Virginia Extension Agent, a Virginia FFA Instructor or another youth exhibitor with animals entered in the show.

  15. Beef market animals must weigh at least 1000 lbs. All market animals must achieve a live grade of select to sell. VDACS graders will grade animals prior to the show.

  16. Purebred breeding heifers must have at least two entries per breed to constitute a breed division. All single breed entries will be entered in the commercial heifer division.

  17. Entry fee is $40.00 per head for sale animals and $15.00 per head for non-sale market animals. Breeding classes are $5.00 per head. Entry fee for out of county exhibitors is $10 per head.

  18. Premiums for each market class will be: 1st-$12; 2nd-$10; 3rd-$8; 4th-$6; 5th-$4; 6th-$2. Premiums for each breeding class will be: 1st-$20; 2nd-$18; 3rd-$16; 4th-$14; 5th-$12; 6th-$10.

All entries are due to the department head or Madison Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. June 20 2008
