Department Rules

  1. All general rules and regulations for the Madison County Fair apply to this department.

  2. All exhibitors must be members actively enrolled in a 4-H/FFA Sheep Project. Exhibitors MUST be a 4-H/FFA Chapter member in good standing in Madison and/or Virginia Cooperative Extension Planning Districts 9 & 10 which includes: Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Rappahannock, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson counties.

  3. Only Madison County 4-H/FFA members are eligible to exhibit and sell market steers at the Madison County Fair. Sale of market animals is optional. Refer to the Madison County Fair Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors from eligible counties are invited to show breeding sheep at the Madison County Fair.

  4. All market lambs must be owned or under the care of the exhibitor at the time of weigh-in (5/18/08). Yearling and aged sheep must be the property of the exhibitor by January 1, 2008. Breeding lambs must be the property of the exhibitor 60 days before the show. All animals must be tagged with a number from the extension office.

  5. Madison County animal exhibits MUST arrive on Tuesday, July 15 between 9:00 a.m. and noon or between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16. Animals MUST be in the barn by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Madison County animals may leave after 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 19. Any exhibitor who removes an animal before the designated time will forfeit all ribbons and premiums. County exhibitors who stay until after the Demolition Derby will receive and additional $5 per head bonus. Visiting counties may remove animals as soon as the show is over.

  6. Health Regulations: The Livestock Committee will check animals for general health, proper castration, ringworm, lice, mange, warts, and other parasites. Any unhealthy animal(s) will be dismissed from the grounds. All sheep must be properly tagged and/or identified in accordance with the USDA Scrapie Eradication guidelines.

  7. All market animals must be properly castrated with no secondary male characteristics, to be eligible for show and sale.

  8. If an animal prolapses at the fair, a veterinarian will be consulted as to whether the animal should be surgically repaired or sent home. The livestock committee has the final ruling in every case.

  9. Sheep may only be shown in one division (i.e. feeder/market, purebred, commercial or wool). Exhibitors may show no more than two entries per class and a maximum of eight total animals. Each animal exhibited must be listed on the official entry form. Only 4-H/FFA members exhibiting animals at the Madison County Fair will be allowed to assist in showing a second entry.

  10. 4-H/FFA exhibitors are expected to be the primary care provider for their animals. Minimal assistance may only be provided by the parents and family members, a bona fide Madison 4-H volunteer leader enrolled in 4-H, a Virginia Extension Agent, a Virginia FFA Instructor or another youth exhibitor with animals entered in the show. The junior exhibitor MUST lead their sheep to final weigh-in.

  11. Feeder and Market Lambs-Only wether or ewe lambs may be shown in this division. Wethers must show no evidence of testicular tissue and be completely healed from castration. To be shown and sold as a market lamb animals must weigh a minimum of 96 lbs. and maximum of 145 lbs. Sheep weighing less than 96 lbs. will show in the feeder lamb class.

  12. All purebred sheep will be shown by breed. Purebred lambs may be exhibited with registration pending; however certification of registration of the sire and dam must be available the day of the show.

  13. Divisions with less than four animals shown by two exhibitors will be combined.

  14. Sheep in the wool breed division may be registered, grade or crossbred. Wool sheep may be exhibited in full fleece, but all sheep must be clean and well groomed. Sheep can be entered as fine, medium, long or coarse wooled in the space designated for breed. Wool classes will be judged as fine and medium wools and long and course wools.

  15. Market lambs must be shorn prior to the final weigh-in and must be clean and well groomed. No market lamb will be exhibited with more than ½ inch wool on any part of its body. Wool breeds and ewe classes may be fitted and shown in wool.

  16. Only tap water may be applied topically. Ice and ice water in any form is prohibited. The application of commercial sprays/lotions, alcohol or any other substance is prohibited.

  17. All lambs must weigh a minimum of 50 lbs to show. Market animals must weigh at least 96 lbs. and achieve a quality grade of choice to sell. VDACS graders will grade animals prior to the show.

  18. Entry fee is $40.00 per head for sale animals and $15.00 per head for non-sale market animals. Breeding classes are $5.00 per head. Entry fee for out of county exhibitors is $10 per head.

  19. Premiums for each class will be: 1st-$12; 2nd-$10; 3rd-$8; 4th-$6; 5th-$4; 6th-$2. Premiums for each breeding class will be: 1st-$20; 2nd-$18; 3rd-$16; 4th-$14; 5th-$12; 6th-$10.
All entries are due to the department head or Madison Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. June 20, 2008.
