Section KB: Food Preparation



Section Rules

  1. Exhibitors must have foods on disposable plates and in zipper-type closure plastic bags, except for decorated cakes. Larger items that do not fit in plastic bags must be easy to open. Mispackaged items will not be accepted.

  2. No mixes may be used in baked exhibits.

  3. All baked exhibits will be judged according to taste, appearance, and texture (see Standards of Judging). Decorated cakes will be judged on appearance alone and will not be cut or tasted, so forms may be used.

  4. All food must have been prepared mainly by the exhibitor; youth exhibitors are allowed to receive help from adults. Siblings may NOT enter items from the same batch.

  5. Only 1 entry per exhibitor per class.

  6. No custard, cream or meringue pies will be accepted. Nothing that will spoil overnight without refrigeration will be accepted.

  7. Except for decorated items, entries must be submitted as follows: Individual items (biscuits, muffins, rolls, cookies): plate of three; pies: 1/4 pie; breads: half-loaves; cakes: half-cakes.

Red Star Yeast Award

Yeast samples and coupons will be available to all contestants entering a yeast bread

2008 Wilton Fair Awards

Wilton Enterprises is pleased to help support the Madison County Fair in the decorated cakes division.

Wilton Best of Category: Decorated Cakes

The Best of Category winners for the Youth and Adult divisions will be awarded a special prize donated by Wilton Enterprises. Only one Best of Class award is available for each division.

Best of Class winners are Blue Award winners in each class under Decorated Cakes & Cookies in the Baked Goods Section (KB) in the Home Ec Department.

Winners will receive a collection of Wilton Decorating items. In addition, winners receive a "Best of Class" certificate.

For the Love of Sorghum

Some people really like sorghum molasses, but here in Madison, we've got some real fanatics! To promote their love of all the wonders of sorghum, the Madison Harvest Festival Association is sponsoring a special event at the 2008 Madison County Fair:

The Best Sorghum Dessert in Madison County.

RULES:

  1. The contest is open to all ages.
  2. The dessert must be made by the exhibitor and contain at least 1/2 cup sorghum.
  3. Only one entry per person.
  4. There will be a $1 entry fee for all divisions (Adult, Sr. Youth, and Jr. Youth).


Bring entries to the Home Economics Building during exhibit registration and check-in on Monday night. They will be judged during the Home Ec judging.

Madison County Fair
Best Chocolate Dessert Contest

Adult Chocolate Dessert:
First Place $25 + A collection of chocolate baking products basket
Second Place $20
Third Place $15

Contest Rules:
  1. Open to any resident of Madison County
  2. Entry must be a baked dessert made from "scratch"
  3. A minimum of 1/4 cup of chocolate must be used and listed in the recipe
  4. Dessert entry must be submitted on cardboard for judging (no doily required)
  5. Recipe(s) listing the ingredients, preparation instructions and recipe author must be submitted with the entry on a 5x7 recipe card or index card
  6. Judging will be based on the following criteria:
    Flavor
    30 points
     
    Overall Appearance
    25 points
     
    Moistness & Crumb/Texture
    20 points
     
    Consistency (size and shape)
    15 points
     
    Creativity (appearance, ingredients, etc.)
    10 points
     
    TOTAL
    100 points
     


Kids Cookie/Brownie/Bar Contest:

  2. Entry must be cookies, brownies or bars made from "scratch"
  3. A minimum of 1/4 cup of chocolate must be used and listed in the recipe
  4. Entry must be submitted as a plate of six (6) on cardboard
  5. Recipe(s) listing the ingredients, preparation instructions and recipe author must be submitted with the entry on a 5x7 recipe card or index card
  6. Judging will be based on the following criteria:

    Moistness & Crumb/Texture

Recipe "MakeOver" Contest

Saturday, July 19, 2:00 p.m. in the Picnic Shelter


What is a recipe MakeOver?
Take your favorite recipe and make it over to be a healthier recipe. Here are some ideas:
  • Healthier recipes include reducing the amount of fat, sugar and salt
  • Healthier recipes mean using whole grains
  • Healthier recipes include using more fruits and vegetables
  • Healthier recipes mean leaving the edible skins of fruits and vegetables


CONTEST RULES
  1. Submit both recipes in writing and mark the ingredients that make it healthier
  2. Make and submit a revised dish for judging at contest time
  3. A minimum of two ingredients must be altered (reduced, substituted, or added.)
  4. Any type of recipe can be submitted: main dish, appetizer, dessert, or side dish


JUDGING
  • A panel of out-or-county judges will determine winners by a taste test and by comparing recipes
  • Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries
  • No pre-registration is required
